5 Ways to Reduce Generation Gap

Generation gap is mostly referred to the change in norms, culture and attitudes of one generation with respect to earlier. But these days the things and technology are changing so fast that this gape is widening and becoming prominent even for five to ten years age difference. Here are few things, I believe can be done to reduce this gap:

1. They ask questions: There are things we do in certain way and do not want to change but sometimes change is better. Do not stick with status-quo just because its been done the same way earlier. A young guy asked his parents on a thanks giving day that why did they use a big pot to serve a relatively small turkey bird. They replied, because our forefathers used to do the same. A little investigation revealed that their ancestors had only that one big pot and they did not have any other option. So, they ask questions if you can not satisfy them, its not bad to hear their reasoning.

2. Trust in them: Young people these days are motivated more than ever. If they have big dreams, just listen to them and trust them. Do not let them down, give them confidence. Once they feel respect, they will be more closer and more involved in you.

3. Make their friends your friends: one of my uncles is really good at making friends with younger guys. In a relatively status-quo oriented society, he is always willing to give respect to younger members of the society and interact with them at equality. You need to make friends with the friends of your young kids, try to go out with them, have dinner or meet ups with young generation.

4. Learn about talk of the town: If you do not know, what internet is? learn about it. If you do not know, what Facebook is? learn about it. you need to see what is hot talk in the town. What is it, which is more popular with young people. What technology they are more interested in? what gadgets they use?

5. Know their hobbies: Discuss their favorite sports with them. Talk about their athletic and movie stars. Surprise your children with gifts related to their favorite comic book, sports gear, or new tech gadget of the day.

I believe its not the responsibility of younger generation to reduce this generation gap. They are never comfortable in initiating a talk, or speaking out loud with elders. Its the job of older generation to make young people comfortable and bring them at ease with them.
