I remember an informal discussion related to experience, one of my friends told this little story. One of his younger brothers was trying to touch heater time and again. His mother was explaining and yelling at him about how hot it was? and he might burn himself. Father who was sitting nearby and observing, said just let him touch. When the kid touched heater, he cried for a moment and then never tried to go near any other heating material. He was told time and again but he learnt the hard way, by his own experience. There is the saying that experience is the best teacher and wise people learn from others experience.
In Korean culture there is a huge respect for age. Your colleagues and friends will ask your age as the second question just after asking your name. It seems rude but its not. Their aim is to give you more respect if you are older than them, even by a day. I think this is because they regard experience more than anything else. I have had this discussion with my nephews many times about respecting experiences of others. I told them that no matter how wise one is or how much exposure one has, there is no replacement of experience. If someone older than you is giving you an advice, that is not binding on you but you should give it a value knowing he had already lived the moments you are living right now.
